The first time I stepped through the door of Barbara Martin Studios I couldn’t believe there is such a place lurking in Hertford. It was full of unique handcrafted pieces and I initially thought the Studio was “a little bit of London Shopping”, but I soon realised it was better. The sometimes-extortionate prices of London didn’t exist although It had the style, quality and service you would expect. It also had a unique quality which I attribute to the skills, vision and drive of Barbara.

One of Barbara’s passions is her Jewellery and it shows. She designs and creates beautiful textured pieces in Silver. Inspiration is usually wind swept bays and cliffs of Cornwall, riverbanks and natural objects – like leaves and seed pods. However after seeing a print at a exhibition in London last year, she was seduced by a pair of 1940′s stockings and launched a new collection entitled “Stocking Tops and Lace” The print hangs in her studio for all too see.

That isn’t the only talent Barbara has. She also designs and makes Fascinators, Headdresses and Hats for: Ascot, Weddings and Special Occasions. She tells me, “If customer brings in their outfit, I can make them something fabulous that will suit them”. What a unique place on your doorstep – I suggest you pay her a visit and see if you feel the same.
